The Supreme Court dismissed ASI 's special leave petition and sustained his life sentence for murdering theft suspect \[name withheld\] by custodial torture. In charge of a Haryana police post, the officer subjected suspects in an overnight theft case to severe flagellation, including the soles of the feet, as 'investigation'; a Haryana man succumbed inside police premises to asphyxiation with torture marks, and the officer's false explanation of suicidal hanging was rejected by the trial court and the High Court. Denouncing the diabolical recurrence of police torture, the Court found no error in the appreciation of evidence and urged the State to stamp out third-degree methods. Matters not addressed in the cited judgment text are not recorded here.

> We are deeply disturbed by the diabolical recurrence of police torture resulting in a terrible scare in the minds of common citizens that their lives and liberty are under a new peril when the guardians of the law gore human rights to death.
