The judgment of the Madras High Court records the following account. the survivor, an 18-year-old transgender youth on bail with a daily-reporting condition at P-3 Vyasarpadi police station, was subjected to sustained physical and sexual torture by station personnel during his reporting visits. He self-immolated opposite the station on 12 June 2006 and died of burn injuries on 29 June 2006. Relying on the Registrar (Vigilance) enquiry report, fabricated general-diary entries, a tampered accident register and the dying declaration, the Division Bench held the suicide was solely in consequence of the conduct of respondents 4 to 8. It directed the State to pay Rs.5 lakhs compensation, ordered disciplinary action against the five policemen, and left the State free to recover the amount from them. Matters not addressed in the cited judgment text are not recorded here.

> only because of the conduct of respondents 4 to 8, the said \[the survivor\] has attempted to commit suicide and ultimately succumbed to the injuries on 29.06.2006
