The judgment of the Kerala High Court records the following account. A Njarackal man, a 25-year-old lawyer returning home by motorcycle after a second-show film on the night of 14 April 2012, was intercepted by the Njarackal police vehicle-check squad on the Vypin-Munambam highway and struck in the face, losing five teeth; the respondents admitted the injury and loss of teeth but disputed the manner of causing it. A Division Bench of the Kerala High Court held the admitted facts amounted to infringement of his right to life and personal liberty at the hands of respondents 5 to 7 by abuse of power. The court awarded Rs 50,000 exemplary compensation payable by the State within one month, with liberty to recover from the three officers after due enquiry, leaving criminal liability in Crime 644/2012 to the criminal court. The listed officer of Njarackal police station is a Home Guard, not a member of the police force; the court recorded his admitted lathi blow. Matters not addressed in the cited judgment text are not recorded here.

> Considering entire facts and circumstances of the case, we feel that an award of compensation of Rs.50,000/-, the relief which is prayed for, is just and proper to meet the ends of justice. We direct the first respondent to pay a compensation of Rs.50,000/-(Rupees fifty thousand only) to the petitioner within one month from the date of the judgment.
