The judgment of the Supreme Court of India records the following account. Replace closing sentence ' ' with the attributed police version: per FIR No.351 dated 13/10/2008 lodged by ASI (para 4), a Narnaul man, a wanted accused, fired at the Bawal police party which returned fire in self-defence; respondents' counsel maintained it was a genuine encounter (para 6). Also replace 'due to the lapse of more than four years' with the court's own words: fresh investigation 'at this distant point of time, will be an exercise in futility' (para 13). Matters not addressed in the cited judgment text are not recorded here.

> After carefully perusing the inquiry report dated 17/11/2008 submitted by Tahsildar, Narnaul and the inquiry report dated 7/1/2011 submitted by the Additional Deputy Commissioner and other relevant record, we are inclined to agree with learned counsel for the appellant and learned amicus curiae that a Narnaul man appears to have died in a fake encounter.
