The Punjab and Haryana High Court awarded Rs 20 lakh to Harjit Kaur, widow of a Verka man @ a Verka man (38), killed by an Amritsar police party on 16 June 2015 at Mudhal near Verka with 23 gunshot injuries fired into his car, holding even a dreaded criminal cannot be killed in cold blood in a fake encounter. The Court noted police registered FIR 242/2015 against the deceased to cover up the killing, followed by an SIT and magisterial enquiry, a second FIR against the policemen and departmental enquiries against four officials. It adjusted Rs 5 lakh already paid and directed the Rs 15 lakh balance within three months. Compensation follows Rohtash Kumar and Manjit Kaur precedents.
