The single judge awarded Rs 1,00,000 compensation with Rs 10,000 costs. A Division Bench affirmed, holding that the detention, interrogation and search were wholly unjustified, that a person cannot be persecuted merely for holding Maoist ideology, and that the compensation was neither exorbitant nor unreasonable, dismissing the State's writ appeal.
