The judgment of the Punjab and Haryana High Court records the following account. A Hansi man died in custody at Police Station City Hansi on the night of 13 February 2011. The Illaqa Magistrate's Section 176 CrPC inquiry found he was murdered by police in custody rather than a suicide, FIR No.125 under Sections 302/120-B/201 IPC was registered, and a coordinate Bench took suo motu cognizance of press reports; the police cancellation report was later accepted in 2011. On 14 November 2014 the Court directed Rs.5,00,000 interim compensation to the widow and two sons, which the State paid. Disposing of both petitions on 21 February 2019, the Court recorded that the grievance stood redressed by the payment (Rs.2 lakh above the Haryana Victim scale), while noting a prima-facie-suicide view on the FSL report and AIIMS medical opinion.
