The Jharkhand High Court held that tribal neighbour a Karmatand man had been languishing in custody since 1 July 2021 for committing no offence whatsoever, having been chargesheeted in Karmatand P.S. Case No. 47 of 2021 solely because he sat beside Asha Devi's body after being called by her husband, with no overt act attributed to him in any witness statement. Observing the case shook the Court's faith in the investigating agency, the Court confirmed his interim bail, awarded Rs 50,000 compensation payable within four weeks through the Superintendent of Police, Jamtara, and directed the Director General of Police to sensitize investigating and supervising officers against harassing innocents.
