A Bhopal man, a Gond tribal final-year MBBS student, was convicted of murdering Shruti Hill by the Bhopal sessions court in 2009 and spent over thirteen years in jail as undertrial and convict. The High Court held the case was deliberately botched up, with a manipulative and preconceived investigation conducted for the sole purpose of falsely implicating him, possibly to shield the actual culprit known to higher police echelons. It set aside the conviction and compared his fate, as eternal damnation, with Nambi Narayanan's ordeal. It awarded Rs 42 lakh compensation payable within ninety days, preserved his separate tort claim for malicious prosecution with adjustment, and ordered preservation of the trial record and DLSA assistance.
