Advocate Kuldeep (23) of Puthila village, Belthangady, who held a civil-court injunction protecting his road access, was dragged from his home on 2 December 2022 when the Sub-Inspector caught him by the neck, dragged and booted him to Punjalkatte station, registering Crime 94/2022 (Sections 447/379 IPC) only afterwards. The bail court recorded the assault and ill-treatment during arrest, and the advocate's 9 December 2022 complaint against the officers was registered as Crime 1/2023 only after the High Court's intervention. The High Court held the arrest grossly illegal and violative of Arnesh Kumar safeguards, awarded Rs 3,00,000 compensation payable within two weeks, and ordered a departmental enquiry against the SI and his cohorts with recovery of compensation from the guilty officers' salaries.
