The Kerala High Court held that an NRI rent-a-car worker home on 15 days' leave for his daughter's wedding was falsely implicated in Chakkarakkal Crime No. 388/2018, a chain-snatching case, arrested on 11 July 2018 and kept 54 days in custody despite CCTV identity mismatch and his impossibility plea. A DySP enquiry exonerated him and implicated the real accused \[name withheld\], noting lapses by the SHO and two ASIs and recommending transfer plus a Punishment Roll entry against SI. The court held the wrongful arrest and detention violated Article 21 and awarded Rs 10 lakh to the first petitioner and Rs 1 lakh each to his wife, two sons and daughter as public-law compensation under Article 226. The State was left at liberty to recover the amount from the erring officers, and the petitioners free to pursue civil remedies. Matters not addressed in the cited judgment text are not recorded here.

> In the above circumstances, this writ petition is disposed of by granting compensation to the tune of Rs.10 lakhs to the 1st petitioner and Rs.1 lakh each to the petitioners 2 to 5, the wife and children of the 1st petitioner, who have suffered mental agony, trauma, defamation and harassment at the hands of respondents 2 to 4.
