Hate-speech case against a sitting MP over remarks in a social-media video: High Court extends protection from arrest to January

Hogalberia police in Nadia registered a case on 28 June 2026 after a BJP leader complained that a Trinamool Congress MP's remarks in a video, made after women protesters gathered with eggs to throw at her, hurt religious sentiments. The Calcutta High Court barred coercive action in July, and the MP was questioned on 14 August. On 1 October 2026 the court extended the protection to 29 January 2027; her petition to quash the case is pending.

What happened

IANS reported on 17 June 2026 that a BJP leader complained at Hogalberia police station that the MP was repeatedly making remarks hurting religious sentiments. The report says BJP women leaders had stood outside the Krishnanagar court holding eggs and tomatoes to throw at her, and that a remark about religious attire in her second video in response went viral.

A Calcutta High Court order of 1 September 2026 identifies the case as Hogolberia Police Station Case No. 150 of 2026 dated 28 June 2026, and records that she was directed in WPA 15399 of 2026 to cooperate with the investigation.

On 1 October 2026 the State filed a report from the officer-in-charge of Hogalberia police station saying she had appeared and answered questions on 14 August 2026 and that the investigation was continuing. The court extended its interim order of 21 July 2026 to 29 January 2027 and listed the matter on 13 January 2027.

PTI reported that the petition seeks quashing of the proceedings on the ground that the allegations are concocted and motivated.
