What happened

APSRTC is a statutory corporation under the Road Transport Corporations Act, 1950. It traces its origins to June 1932, when it began as a wing of the Nizam State Railway, and says it runs from 129 depots and 423 bus stations, connecting 14,123 villages.

CARE Ratings' March 2025 rationale reports provisional figures of Rs 7,175.71 crore in total operating income and a loss after tax of Rs 1,566.76 crore for 2023-24, after a loss of Rs 1,770.80 crore in 2022-23, and a fleet of 11,216 buses. Its organisation chart listed 47,687 staff on 1 July 2024.

On 9 July 2026 the state's Special Chief Secretary (Transport) dismissed reports of APSRTC's privatisation as false, saying the induction of electric buses under the Centre's PM e-Bus Sewa scheme 'does not involve the transfer of RTC assets or services to private entities', The Hindu reported.

What we could not confirm
