The state company that owns the 2,400 MW Sri Damodaram Sanjeevaiah thermal power station at Krishnapatnam. In a report tabled on 6 March 2026 the CAG named it the source of 98% of the losses of Andhra Pradesh's loss-making state enterprises, with a Rs 1,227.55 crore loss and its net worth wiped out.

What happened

APPDCL was formed in 2006 to build and run the Sri Damodaram Sanjeevaiah Thermal Power Station, three 800 MW supercritical coal units at Krishnapatnam, and sells its power to the state's distribution companies.

The CAG's compliance audit of Andhra Pradesh state public sector enterprises (Report No. 7 of 2025), tabled in the legislature on 6 March 2026, found that of Rs 1,251.63 crore lost by five state enterprises, '98.07 per cent amounting to ₹1,227.55 crore was contributed by one power sector SPSE i.e., Andhra Pradesh Power Development Company Limited'.

On its latest finalised accounts (2021-22), the CAG lists APPDCL's paid-up capital at Rs 2,068.28 crore, long-term borrowing at Rs 16,155.38 crore, accumulated losses at Rs 3,863.65 crore and net worth at Rs (-)1,795.37 crore. The same report counts 21 inactive Andhra Pradesh state enterprises that have 'effectively ceased to carry out their operations or are under liquidation process'.

What we could not confirm

The CAG figures are from the company's latest finalised accounts at the time of audit (2021-22). The plant is operating; 'sick' here means its net worth is negative, not that it is closed or listed for sale.
