How we verify →

East Central Railway is a railway zone of Indian Railways under the Ministry of Railways. It is headquartered at Hajipur, Vaishali district, Bihar, and became operational on 1 October 2002. Its network is reported at about 9,518 track km and fully electrified as of 31 March 2025.

What happened

ECR's official introduction page states the zone is headquartered at Hajipur (Bihar), became fully operational on 1 October 2002, was carved out of parts of the Eastern Railway and North Eastern Railway zones, and comprises five divisions: Danapur, Dhanbad, Pt Deen Dayal Upadhyaya, Sonpur and Samastipur (source: ecr.indianrailways.gov.in introduction page). The division-wise mapping (Sonpur and Samastipur from N.E. Railway; Danapur, Dhanbad and Pt Deen Dayal Upadhyaya from Eastern Railway) is stated on the Wikipedia page (source: Wikipedia East Central Railway zone page).

As of 31 March 2025 the zone is reported to operate 9,518.196 track km and 4,399.897 route km across Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh and to be fully electrified; Hajipur is the district headquarters of Vaishali, about 25 km by road from Patna (source: secondary compilation, Wikipedia East Central Railway zone page, which cites the ECR official site). The official introduction page likewise reports over 4,400 route km, more than 9,500 track km, four states, and 100% electrification of broad-gauge routes.

FY2024-25 station figures compiled on the same page put Patna Junction first (passenger revenue about Rs 816.11 crore, footfall about 5.93 crore), followed by Danapur and Muzaffarpur Junction (source: secondary compilation; an official zone-level earnings release for 2025-26 was not opened).

What we could not confirm

Zone-level revenue/profit and employee counts are not published separately from Indian Railways accounts on the pages opened, so financials and employees are null. Network and station figures above are from a secondary compilation, not an official release opened during this run; no 2026 official zone development was verified.
