How we verify →

HPPCL is a state-sector power producer owned jointly by the Government of Himachal Pradesh, the Himachal Pradesh Infrastructure Development Board and Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board Limited. Its most recent material official development was the 20 June 2026 notification of award for a project-management consultant for the Thana Plaun Hydroelectric Project.

What happened

HPPCL's official overview says it was incorporated in December 2006 to develop power generation on behalf of the Government of Himachal Pradesh. It reports 328 MW commissioned, comprising 276 MW of hydro and 52 MW of solar capacity.

HPPCL's current RTI disclosure records the shareholding at 31 March 2025 as GoHP 43.86%, HPIDB 50.57% and HPSEBL 5.57%. This establishes aggregate ownership by the state government and its controlled bodies.

HPPCL's official news register records a notification of award dated 20 June 2026 for engagement of a project-management consultant for the Thana Plaun Hydroelectric Project.

The audited FY2023-24 financial statements report paid-up capital of Rs 2,342.63 crore and closing retained earnings of negative Rs 865.72 crore.

What we could not confirm

A current official total employee count was not found. HPPCL's FY2021-22 secretarial audit noted that direct GoHP ownership alone was below 51%, but current disclosure shows the remaining shares are held by HPIDB and HPSEBL, both Himachal Pradesh public-sector bodies; HPPCL is therefore included as a state-sector joint enterprise under the requested broader PSU definition.
