What happened

KMRL describes its mission as making Kochi more liveable through public transit and shifting from a metro builder-operator toward an integrated urban-mobility provider across bus, boat, auto, taxi and metro modes, per its official about page, which also lists the Annual Report 2024-25 in English and Hindi among its latest publications.

Joint ownership is evidenced on the company's official board page: the 12-member board includes four Centre-linked nominee directors (OSD(UT), Joint Secretary and Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, plus an NCRTC finance director) alongside four Kerala-government nominees (the Chief Secretary, Additional Chief Secretary (Finance), Secretary Transport (Metro), and the Ernakulam District Collector), chaired by Shri Srinivas R Katikithala with Shri Loknath Behera as Managing Director.

The company's project page lists the operating extent as Aluva to SN Junction (24 stations), with Phase IA (Petta to SN Junction) and Phase IB (SN Junction to Thripunithura Terminal) extensions and a JLN Stadium to Infopark corridor whose detailed project report was submitted to the Central Government.

For FY2023-24 the company site reports metro operations revenue of Rs 151.30 crore plus Rs 16.93 crore of other income, Rs 145.29 crore of metro operating expenses yielding a Rs 22.94 crore operating surplus, but after finance costs of about Rs 294.22 crore, depreciation of about Rs 179.54 crore and other comprehensive deficit, a pre-tax shortfall of Rs 433.49 crore; core transit intake of about Rs 168.23 crore was up about Rs 36.01 crore (27.24%) on the prior year.

What we could not confirm

Exact current equity percentages could not be confirmed: the large annual-report PDFs exceeded fetch limits and the Annual Return 2024-25 PDF (posted at a February 2026 file path, hence the date above) downloaded as unreadable binary, so the date is inferred from the official upload path. Employee count and FY2024-25 figures are therefore left null. The commonly cited equal Centre-State equity split is not asserted because no readable official page verified it.
