ConcludedThe Supreme Court of India entered convictions against police personnel in this judgment.
The Supreme Court on 2 May 1995 convicted three Haryana Police officers — SP, Addl. SP and SHO of Sadar, Hissar — of criminal contempt in a habeas corpus case. The Court, acting on a CBI enquiry report, found that a Hisar man and taxi driver [name withheld] had been illegally detained at Hissar police station from 15 to 17 January 1994, that the officers filed false affidavits denying the detention, and that two of them tutored the driver to give false evidence while proceedings were pending. The Court rejected their apologies as not genuine, calling their conduct a calculated obstruction of justice. It sentenced the SP to two months' simple imprisonment and the other two to three months each with fines of Rs. 1,500, while dropping perjury proceedings and declining compensation. Matters not addressed in the cited judgment text are not recorded here.
