ConcludedThe Karnataka High Court recorded adverse findings against police personnel and ordered Rs 50,000.
The judgment of the Karnataka High Court records the following account. A Bengaluru man and his sister [name withheld], who had filed a private complaint against a religious seer, were assaulted by K. G. Nagar police on the night of 7 January 2007, illegally detained at the station till the evening of 8 January 2007 and treated inhumanly. On a habeas corpus petition the High Court first secured their release and then ordered a Registrar (Vigilance) enquiry, which proved the assault, illegal detention and inhuman treatment on 7-8 January 2007 while rejecting claims for the earlier dates. A Division Bench accepted the report, awarded Rs 50,000 compensation plus Rs 5,000 litigation costs payable by the State, and directed the Director General of Police to conduct an independent enquiry and proceed against the erring officials.
