Pavagada Police Police Constable vs The Director General and Inspector General of Police and Another

The judgment of the Karnataka High Court records the following account. On the night of 15 February 1987, a woman and her husband who had missed their bus in Pavagada town were stopped by three drunken police constables including [name withheld], abused and assaulted, then taken by jeep to the police station where they were inhumanly beaten and the woman was sexually humiliated. A commission of inquiry indicted the police, and a joint disciplinary proceeding held the grave-misconduct charge proved against [name withheld], leading to his removal from service. The Karnataka High Court credited the direct evidence of both victims, rejected pleas of discrimination, disproportionality and reliance on a technical criminal-trial acquittal, and dismissed the writ petition. The court sustained the removal from service; no compensation was ordered. Matters not addressed in the cited judgment text are not recorded here.
