Ram Karan vs State of Rajasthan

The Jaipur Bench of the Rajasthan High Court dismissed an appeal and upheld the conviction of former SHO-Inspector Ram Karan of Aligarh Police Station, Tonk, under Section 161 IPC and Section 5(1)(d) read with Section 5(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1947. Ram Karan had threatened complainant [name withheld] with criminal prosecution under Section 182 IPC over an alleged false abduction complaint unless paid a bribe of Rs. 200, which was seized during an Anti-Corruption Department trap. Despite the officer passing away during the 36-year appeal pendency and his legal representatives continuing the appeal, the High Court held demand and acceptance firmly established and affirmed his conviction and concurrent one-year sentence.
