ConcludedThe Orissa High Court recorded adverse findings against police personnel and ordered Rs 30,000.
The judgment of the Orissa High Court records the following account. A Cuttack man, a 63-year-old furniture shop owner, was arrested from his shop near Cuttack Chandi Mandir Chowk on 12 May 2026 by Lalbag Police Station on a purported non-bailable warrant in a 2001 criminal case. Subsequent judicial inquiries by the SDJM Bhubaneswar confirmed that the warrant was a counterfeit forgery bearing a fake court seal, and that Mohapatra had no connection whatsoever to the case. The Orissa High Court found the arrest and detention prima facie illegal in violation of Article 21. The Court awarded Rs. 30,000 interim compensation to the petitioner, recoverable from the police or court officials found responsible upon conclusion of inquiries by the SDJM and DCP Cuttack. Matters not addressed in the cited judgment text are not recorded here.
