Order issued
ConcludedThe Supreme Court of India recorded adverse findings against police personnel and ordered Rs 2,500,000.
A Seepat man, aged 34 and the sole breadwinner of his family, was arrested by PS Seepat on 18 January 2024 for possessing six litres of mahua liquor and died in custody on 22 January 2024 with a fatal blunt head injury and multiple ante-mortem injuries recorded in the Section 176 CrPC judicial inquiry. The Supreme Court affirmed the High Court's finding of custodial violence, rejected the State's plea of inaction over the unserved inquiry report as a cover-up story, and called the High Court's Rs 1 lakh award a pittance. As an interim measure, the court directed Rs 25 lakh compensation within four weeks and ordered the CBI to register a regular criminal case and prosecute all officials found responsible. The court also directed the DGP to transmit all records within a week, reserving final determination of compensation for later. Matters not addressed in the cited judgment text are not recorded here.
