Madurai Man v. Inspector & Ors (illegal detention and custodial torture, Samayanallur 2003); CC No. 6/2004

The Principal District and Sessions Judge, Madurai, sitting as the Human Rights Court (CC No. 6/2004), convicted Inspector of Samayanallur police station for illegally detaining a Madurai man from 17 April 2003 — shuttling him between Kadupatti and Sholavandan stations without letting his family see him — and brutally beating him with a lathi all over his body, fracturing bones, while also seizing his mother and minor sister at 2 am on 21 April 2003. The court found he violated the victim's fundamental and human rights and sentenced him to a Rs 4,000 fine (Rs 3,500 compensation to the victim) under section 324 IPC read with section 30 of the Human Rights Act, in default one year's RI. The Madras High Court (2 July 2012, a Madurai man v. [name withheld]) relied on this conviction while noting the officer had since been promoted [name withheld] despite it.
