State of Maharashtra v. Thane Police Sub-Inspector
Per the Supreme Court judgment of 27-10-1983, Narsingrao Pimple, then a Sub-Inspector attached to Ambarnath Police Station, held up a prohibition charge-sheet against complainant [name withheld] and demanded Rs.2,000 on 09-04-1972 and again on 13-04-1972 to shelve the case, accepting twenty Rs.100 notes in a trap near the Ambarnath octroi naka on 14-04-1972. The trial court convicted him (2 years RI + Rs.2,000 fine) and the Bombay High Court acquitted him in January 1976, but the Supreme Court (Fazal Ali, J.) held the trap proved and the defence a smokescreen, allowing the [name withheld] appeal and convicting him under s.161 IPC and ss.5(1)(a)/5(2) of the 1947 Act with 6 months concurrent RI and Rs.2,000 fine.
