Punjab Police Head Constable & Another vs State of Punjab

The Punjab and Haryana High Court rejected the criminal revision of Head Constable of the Punjab Police and his wife [name withheld], upholding their conviction under s.420 IPC for extracting Rs.70,000 from job-seeker a Faridkot man on the false promise of arranging a police constable post. Rs.50,000 was paid at the accused's police quarter in Jalandhar and Rs.20,000 later at Sadiq, but neither employment nor refund followed. The Court held the evidence was rightly appreciated by the courts below and that non-examination of the go-between was immaterial. The sentence of two years imprisonment with a Rs.2,000 fine each, imposed by the Judicial Magistrate Faridkot and affirmed on appeal, was left unmodified.
