CBI v. Punjab Police Deputy Superintendent of Police at time of offence (retired as Senior Superintendent of Police)
The court of CBI Special Judge [name withheld], Mohali, on 1 August 2025 found five retired Punjab Police officers guilty of criminal conspiracy, murder and destruction of evidence for staging two fake encounters in Tarn Taran in July 1993 in which seven youths (three of them Special Police Officers) were abducted, tortured and killed. The CBI, which took over the case on a 1996 Supreme Court order, proved through post-mortem and forensic evidence that the encounters were fabricated and bodies cremated as unclaimed. On 4 August 2025 the court sentenced all five to rigorous life imprisonment with Rs 3.5 lakh fine each, calling their conduct morally bankrupt and profoundly inhumane.
